Jan Machenhauer

Jan Machenhauer began his career in fashion working in the industrial end of the industry before easing into designing under his own name.

More than four decades ago, Jan opened his boutique and showroom Zone 1 in Copenhagen with Erik Tyrrell as a creative laboratory for celebrating experiments and craftsmanship. Ever since, this is where he has cultivated his trademark sculptural aesthetic with emphasis on natural fabrics and detailed structures. Jan maintained a local production designing and sewing his collections in Copenhagen to create fashion that lasts.

Over the years, a fascination with dance and architecture have run as creative threads through his work heralding impeccable tailoring and elaborate design.

Zone 1 still carries Jan’s carefully crafted collections as well as his line of shirts in collaboration with Line Hangaard. He also runs the brand Épice with Bess Nielsen which features elegant scarves and bags sold worldwide.

He has received a number of honors including the Danish Council of Craftsmen as the first fashion designer in the history of the award.
